Look – Caffé A La Mode

Look Caffe a la Mode

I’ll admit that next to chocolate, my favorite thing in the world is coffee. Any chance to inject a little bit of that obsession into this blog is a welcome one, which today is offered by Fujiya’s attractive chocolates brand Look.

Look’s à la mode offering is packed in a bright yellow box, including pictures of four coffee cups, showing the four flavors found within: caffé latte; caffé mocha; caramel latte; and mont-blanc latte. Each box contains twelve kinda tiny chocolates, and so you get three of each. As I like to note, the box closes neatly on the front with an easy latch, and wrapping all twelve chocolates in one silver wrapper (rather than individually wrapped) is much appreciated.

First on the chopping block are the chocolates marked with a simple L: the caffé lattes. The flavoring is in a small layer within a very soft chocolate exterior (these chocolates will melt in your hand). I could stand the coffee taste to be a little stronger, to differentiate the taste from the caffé mocha, but as a basic coffee chocolate, I enjoy them. The caffé mochas, marked with a depressed O, taste surprisingly similar to a Starbucks mocha, but still, the flavor doesn’t overwhelm the chocolate taste.

The chocolates in this pack that I most enjoy are the caramel (raised O) and mont-blanc (K). Just the right amount of sweet caramel mixes with the Look chocolate and the slight coffee flavor in a fantastic way. As discussed in a previous review, mont-blanc is a French dessert featuring chestnut paste. In these chocolates, the mont-blanc flavor is a sort of clear gel over the chestnut paste, which is a little odd, but it doesn’t effect the flavor. These are possibly a little too sweet, and not as good as Pocky’s mont-blanc, but as a fourth of the package, they offer a nice change of pace.

All in all, Look’s caffé a la mode brand may be a little dominated by the chocolate, but I enjoyed every bit of the boxes I purchased. At only ¥120 for sixteen (albeit small) pieces, Look offers quality flavors at a reasonable price. You’d be well-served picking them up, and I’ll certainly look into Fujiya’s other Look brands. 4/5
