Ginger Ale Kit Kat

Ginger Ale Kit Kat

This blog is called Pocky Watch, and though there have been tons of flavors of Pocky, Nestlé has really upped the game when it comes to limited edition flavors. Every season they put out two or three new flavors that range from normal to weird. Released in early October, the ginger ale flavored Kit Kat falls under the weird category for me. How exactly does one combine ginger ale and chocolate covered wafers? The only answer I can come up with is: not well.

Ginger Ale Kit Kat

These Kit Kats are packaged the same as most, with two packs of two fingers each, in a small cardboard box. I really like this packaging compared to all four fingers wrapped in a plastic wrapper, because it means you don’t have to commit to the whole bar at once, and isn’t that the point of a snapable candy bar? The box has a carbonated beverage motif, and a small glass of ginger ale with a slice of lemon floating in it. I have never in my life seen yellow ginger ale, and I probably wouldn’t drink it if someone handed me a glass. Lemon could be good in ginger ale though. The box reveals that the candy contains both ginger and lemon. On a side note, it’s also advertised that this particular Kit Kat is part of a ‘calorie-control’ campaign, which at 100 calories in a pack, isn’t false (200 calories per box).

I’m a snob when it comes to ginger products, because I want the real thing in my candy and drinks. If it doesn’t burn, it’s not gingery enough. Annoyingly, these off-white wafers had zero ginger flavor and all I could taste was lemon. The lemon was ok; it reminded me a lot of lemon bars made from boxed mix and smelled a lot like furniture polish. There was a question on Twitter asking if the candy was fizzy. The back of the box advertises fizzy powder in the wafer, but like the ginger, the fizz was absent. I think it was an excellent idea since it would have added something interesting to this product; too bad it went flat. I wanted a gingery Kit Kat and Nestlé did not deliver at all, but the candy wasn’t inedible, so it gets 2/5.
